چکیده

This paper applies techniques to obtain an aggregate measure of syntactic distance between two varieties of English spoken by firstand second-generation Finnish Australians and examines the degree of what we call syntactic ‘contamination’ in the two. Our general goal is to detect the linguistic sources of the variation between the two groups and interpret the findings from (at least) two perspectives, universal vs. contact influence. In our reading, the notion of “universal” is concerned, not with hypotheses about Chomskyan universals and their applicability to second language acquisition (SLA) or with hypotheses about potential processing constraints in any detail, but rather with more general properties of the language faculty and natural tendencies in the grammar, termed ‘vernacular primitives’ by Chambers (2003). To explain differential usage by the two groups, we also draw upon the strategies and processes that L2 learners usually evince in their interlanguage regardless of their L1 (Ellis 1994). Because of the limited scope of the paper, we can only examine, in detail, potential contact-induced effects of Finnish on the English of Finnish Australians.

Title : Applying Language Technology to Detect Shift Effects

We discuss an application of a technique from language technology to tag a corpus automatically and to detect syntactic differences between two varieties of Finnish Australian English, one spoken by the first generation and the other by the second generation. The technique utilizes frequency profiles of trigrams of part-of-speech categories as indicators of syntactic distance between the variet...

Detecting Syntactic Contamination in Emigrants: The English of Finnish Australians

The paper discusses an application of a technique to tag a corpus containing the English of Finnish Australians automatically and to analyse the frequency vectors of part-ofspeech (POS) trigrams using a permutation test. Our goal is to detect the linguistic sources of the syntactic variation between two groups, the ‘Adults,’ who had received their school education in Finland, and the ‘Juveniles...

Syntactic Misuse, Overuse and Underuse: A Study of a Parsed Learner Corpus and its Target Hypothesis

This talk is concerned with using syntactic annotation of learner language and the corresponding target hypothesis to find structural acquisition difficulties in German as a foreign language. Using learner data for the study of acquisition patterns is based on the idea that learners do not produce random output but rather possess a consistent internal grammar (interlanguage; cf. [1] and many ot...
